FEDERN TOUR 2016

Bob Bernstein

Bob Bernstein

Name: Bob Bernstein

Lives: Los Angeles, California, USA

Instrument: Pedal steel, dobro, lap steel

Musical beginnings: I began playing guitar at the age of 10 after hearing Jimi Hendrix for the first time.  I then listened to all the great blues guitarists, which introduced me to bottleneck (slide) guitar. After saving money all through high school to buy a good electric guitar, I heard a pedal steel and took all my money and bought one. It’s been an ongoing love affair with that instrument ever since!

Career highlights: I played the pedal steel that was featured on the score to Brokeback Mountain, which won the Oscar for Best Original Score. I also worked with Hans Zimmer on the score for the film Man of Steel and recently recorded score music for the next season of the NetFlix series Narcos. I have played steel on recordings and live performances with such acclaimed artists as Freddy Fender, Tanya Tucker, Jerry Lee Lewis, Emmylou Harris, Mark Chesnutt, Dwight Yoakam, Michelle Shocked, Curt Kirkwood from the Meat Puppets, Erasure, Gatemouth Brown, and Hank Thompson. I am particularly proud of my work in Latin music, where I have helped break down musical borders and introduce the pedal steel to a whole new audience. For the last 5 years I have toured and recorded with Mexican superstar Joan Sebastian and have contributed steel to recordings by other popular Latin artists including Juanes, Vicente Fernandez, Jenni Rivera, Lucero, and La Santa Cecilia.

Favourite music: I really love all music if it’s done with passion. I am particularly fond of American roots music: rock, country, blues, Cajun, and R&B.

My perfect day ... Anything that involves my family, music, and the beach is wonderful. Oh yeah, a nice Scotch whiskey is great, too.

3 must haves for life on tour:

1. A steady supply of crossword puzzles
2. A good book
3. Lots of Buddy Emmons recordings
