The Ukrainian crew cooks superb curd dumplings for breakfast and stews for midday. We are as well-fed as the rats along the riverbank, which live on the wheat grains that go overboard. The dates, for which I am making the journey, are indeed the most important thing, but everything else is primary – as Hans Krankl says.
