Stromlinien
- Ein Logbuch by Hubert von Goisern
A musical bridge through Europe along the Danube:
the logbook of the tour
This book tells the story of the journey that Hubert von Goisern
and his friends undertook on a cargo ship converted to a stage ship.
With a floating, musical, singing village, as he called it, he sailed
the Danube upstream and downstream through new Europe, from the centre
to the very edges, from Linz to Rotterdam and down to the Black Sea.
He tells of encounters with people along the river banks, of musical
colleagues from a dozen different countries, of joint concerts, of
the longing for freedom and distance and of a vision: unity in variety.
Music is the common language and the message. And Hubert von Goisern
is an artist who carries this out into the world, who looks for understanding
and exchange across all boundaries. And so he sets off on journeys,
off to uncharted territory and returns time and again as a new person.

Visitors to Hubert von Goisern's concerts
in recent years will have no doubt noticed the three Ladin musicians
on stage: Marlene Schuen, Elisabeth Schuen and Maria Moling - wonderful
singers, playing playing violin and percussion. The first songs from Ganes (mermaids
from Ladin mythology) were composed on the Linz
Europe Tour concert ship and are sung in Ladin dialect - the
connection between home and the wide world, love and departure in
distinctive and beautiful pop songs.
The album Rai de sorëdl (Sunray)
- with a guest appearance by HvG - will be released on 28th May
2010. As the band undertake their first rehearsals the anticipation
is great for their concerts starting in May.

Encounter between Claudio Magris
and Hubert von Goisern |
| 30th November 2009 |
An event
for the Salzburger Festspiele 2010
Claudio Magris, born in 1939 in the
Italian city of Trieste, is one of Italy’s
most important experts on German literature and writers on current
cultural matters and one of the best-known literati and essayists
in Europe. His book Danube: a sentimental
journey from the source to the Black Sea became a standard
in 30 countries.
Hubert von Goisern set an equally daring
milestone with his Linz
Europe Tour from the Black Sea to the North Sea, as he
and his band on sailed downstream to the mouth of the river on
a cargo ship converted to a stage, inviting musicians from each
country along the river to come on board and giving concerts together
with them for the people on the shore.
It is the literary and musical journey to new shores that connects
the experiences of Claudio Magris and Hubert von Goisern. Both explorations
of the river became odyssees through the history of a region in which
the chronicle of Europe is reflected and boundaries are blurred in
the truest sense of the word.

in order for something new to develop, something has to be able to come to an end too.
the harbour festival in linz was a worthy ending to our journeys down to the black sea, up to the north sea and back again. as we sang schluss, aus, vorbei together
with wolfgang niedecken, xavier naidoo, konstantin
wecker and willi resetarits shortly before midnight on 5th july, a
life chapter came to a close. for four long, though also entertaining
years we gave ourselves up to the concept of sailing a stage ship
across europe, looking for meetings with musicians, establishing ties,
forming friendships.
leaving all that behind us was only really bearable
because the open air season lay before us and we were able to look
forward to the many concerts that were ahead.
the ultimate finale took place in ischl.
on three consecutive nights: the 12th, 13th and 14th august, in the
lehár theater, that unique old theatre auditorium, unparalleled
in atmosphere and intimacy, we once more played the music that had
led us together with so many people across Europe.
the live album haut
und haar gives you the chance to experience what happened
at least acoustically at our concerts. and because it's easier to say
goodbye when there is the prospect of new adventures and of seeing
each other again, we have come to the decision that we will be going
on tour again in 2011/12 as the same lineup. with a new programme,
which will develop in the meantime.
of course two years is a long time and god knows
(or not) what fate intends for us. but that's our plan in any case. on this note - auf wiedersehen - we'll see each other
In 2011, inshallah.

Linz Europe Tour: 3rd - 5th July 2009, Linz Harbour |
The adventurous river journey of the Linz
Europe Tour is now over, the concert barge has returned
to its original purpose, carrying ballast along the river - but
the energy and joy in both playing music and meeting other musicians
and people is being carried on into 2009, the year in which Linz
is the European Capital of Culture.
From 3rd to 5th July 2009 the finale of the Linz
Europe Tour will be taking place with a festival, in
which nearly all the protagonists of the past two eventful
and richly musical years will join together on stage. Anyone
who could not make it to a concert on the route to the Black
Sea or Amsterdam now has the chance to see how these exciting
musical encounters will be recalled, not on board this time,
but still together with Hubert von Goisern on stage.
The three-day programme will be carried by Hubert von Goisern
and his band, who after the end of the leisurely forward motion
on the barge took on a terrific concert hall tour at a faster tempo.

| Far, far away: The world of Hubert von Goisern |
| 10th December 2008 |
| A personal portrait on the trail
of a musical discoverer, both at home and abroad: Hubert von Goisern |
|
In 1992 Hubert
von Goisern found fame across all borders with the song Koa
Hiatamadl. He was considered as the most successful representative
of "new folk music" and had become the founder of so-called "alpine
rock". Yet his position on his musical trail between boundaries
had barely been defined before he was somewhere else - departing
and arriving to explore the sound of the world. And since then
he has reinvented himself time and time again.
The search led Hubert von Goisern "far, far away",
from Hallstatt to New York, from Bad Ischl to Timbuktu, from
Salzburg to Dakar. And it also led him back deep into the heart
of the very native tradition that he had revived and then revived
anew - with what he had experienced "on tour": not
restless, but curious and open. And thus to this day he has remained
true to himself, not just musically, but in his social
and political commitments too.
Bernhard Flieher has followed these journeys through many destinations
and both the biographical and musical development, from the beginnings
to present day. Along the way he describes the path that has
been taken: straight ahead.

| Austrian National Election 2008:
Comment from Hubert von Goisern |
| 29th/30th September & 4th/5th October 2008 |
what a bloody mess!
with the result of the austrian national election, the biblical
saying "Where three have come together, i am
there among them" is given new meaning. it's incredible
that the right-wing camp is at 30%. though the most depressing
thing of all is that the most reactionary, retrogressive party
won the most votes with the under-30s, a hefty 25%!
it was said
in the 60s that one should beware of the over-30s. now exactly
the opposite seems to be true.
of course it can't be denied that the situation 40 years ago
was one of departure and relative recklessness, while the young
people of today didn't just inherit a pile of rubbish, but were
also born into a world of upheaval. however
"the good old days" evoked by those on the right are an illusion.
there's no way back. retreating and sealing yourselves off has
never been a solution, otherwise things will only get worse.
we live in a world in which we need each other.
but it's not over til the fat lady sings and we're
still a long way off from it being time to emigrate.
unimaginable, but desirable for many would be a 3 party coalition:
red-black-green.
i've never been as sad after an election as i am this time. and
now there's the resignation of ALEXANDER
VAN DER BELLEN. understandable after such a disappointment, but
what a loss for politics, for austria. THE MAN BELONGS IN GOVERNMENT!
precisely because he is what he is: competent and a man of
integrity.
that alone is a rare combination in politics and he has a friendly,
polite nature to add to this. considering the idiocy
and spitefulness of our political landscape, these are all qualities
to which i take off my hat.
and then there are the non-voters - i wondered myself about
not voting this time, as the result was foreseeable. namely that
the blacks would lose, the reds would get one in the eye, but
be ahead by a nose and the fruits of this would fall into the lap
of the right; and so once more there would be a grand coalition.
but i'm happy to have cast my vote - one can see what the non-voters
have done. ignorance is no better than stupidity. yes, to me voting
out of protest is pubescent stupidity. if one really wants a change
of situation in the political landscape it's not enough to vote
for a brayer. the greens could have led a better election campaign.
but is it not exactly this absence of gimmickry with van der bellen
that so refreshingly sets him apart
from the fairytale-tellers and barons of lies?

After a summer full
of musical exchanges and adventures the second stage of the Linz
Europe Tour is now drawing to an end. On 31st August Hubert
von Goisern and his band will be playing the last concert of the Linz
Europe Tour West, which led them all the way to the North
Sea and back again, in Passau.
On 1st September, with 12,000 river kilometres
behind it, the flotilla will be returning to its home port in
Linz. HvG and his musicians will be performing a final encore
on the Danube when they play on their ship's stage from about
1.30pm for spectators along the Donaulände in Linz.
There will be an opportunity to hear some of Hubert
von Goisern's stories and impressions from the journey at first
hand, when on 25th September the musician talks to Linz 09 intendant
Martin Heller in Linz about his experiences over the past couple
of months and looks ahead to the finale: the harbour festival next

On 17th July in Stuttgart
it will be "showtime!" again for Hubert von Goisern and
his band. After some time away from his concert ship, recovering
at home from illness, HvG is going on board again.
With the musical captain at the helm once more the concert in Stuttgart
harbour signals the continuation of the Linz
Europe Tour 2008. The journey leads along the Neckar and
Rhine to the North Sea, with detours into Belgian and Dutch
waterways. The return trip to Linz will be made down the Rhine,
Main, Rhine Main Danube Canal and Danube. Stops will be made along
the way of course, as Hubert von Goisern and his band make the
rivers of Europe sound with help from great local artists such
as Philipp Poisel, Zap
Mama and many more.
[See the Tourplan for
all the tour dates]
There are also some treats coming on TV: On Wednesday
16th July Hubert von Goisern will be guest on Lebens-Künstler on
ORF 2 at 23.00 hrs. Helmut Zilk will be talking to the artist
about his life, family, work and, of course, the Linz
Europe Tour. This Sunday, 20th July, at 13.30 hrs Goisern
goes East will
also premiere on ORF 2. The five-part documentary about
Hubert von Goisern's tour through eastern Europe along the Danube
will be shown on ORF and Bayerische Fernsehen during the summer.

| Linz Europe Tour West temporarily adjourned |
7th July 2008
3 Hubert von Goisern concerts rescheduled due to
ill health; the ship tour will continue on 17th July
The second stage of the Linz Europe
Tour, which had made
a successful start, leading Hubert von Goisern along the rivers to the
North Sea this summer, had to be temporarily halted yesterday in Mainz.
The reason being that Hubert von Goisern is suffering from pneumonia.
Under doctor's orders, he must now rest and recover for a week and
not undertake any performances. This will affect the dates in Ulm (7th
July / Donaufestival) and Karlsruhe (11th July), which will be made
up at later dates. The ship tour will continue as planned on the 17th
July in Stuttgart.
Donaufestival Ulm: For the Donaufestival in Ulm today,
a band was quickly found who will take Hubert von Goisern's slot: at
19.30 hrs the Moldovan band Zdob si Zdub will go on stage as planned;
then at 21.00 hrs !Dela Dap will take over with their urban gypsy sound.
Admission for the evening is free. Purchased tickets will retain their
validity for Hubert von Goisern's substitute concert in the Ulm Donauhalle
on 6th November.
Tomorrow, Tuesday 8th July, Zdob
Si Zdub, Rambo Amadeus
and the gypsy brass band Karandila will
be appearing in Ulm. Here fans can experience three excellent bands,
who accompanied Hubert von Goisern on his ship tour last summer on his
way to the Black Sea. Unfortunately Hubert von Goisern will not be able
to introduce his companions himself as planned, but the show will still
take place.
Karlsruhe: The Hubert von Goisern
concert on 11th July in Karlsruhe has been postponed until 22nd July:
the location will remain the Rheinhafen (in the grounds of KRP, Nordbeckenstrasse
18a) and the show will take place as planned on the ship's stage.
Mainz: When HvG had to call off
the concert for the first time in his
career just before the show started, it was natural for guest artist
Xavier Naidoo to let the idea of the Linz Europe
Tour live in an impromptu
concert with HvG's band. Those who left the concert on account of Hubert
von Goisern's ill health now have the opportunity to see HvG
in the Rheingoldhalle Mainz. The alternate date is
10th November, 8pm. Tickets retain their validity. Concert-goers who
stayed for the impromptu concert on 6th July can obtain a discount ticket
for 10€ for
the alternate date.

| 18th June 2008 |
| The second stage of the Linz Europe
Tour 2007-2009 begins |
|
The time has come: this week Hubert von Goisern,
band and crew will all be settling in on their concert ship once
more, before it is time to "cast off!" in Wallsee - the
home ship's home harbour - on 26th June. The first concert of the Linz
Europe Tour 2008 will take place on 27th June in Obermühl.
After Obermühl, the only concert in Austria, the ship will
carry its musical load westwards to the North Sea. Many concerts
and musical meetings will be making the rivers and waterways of
Europe sound over the next two months as HvG travels the Danube,
Main, Rhine Main Danube Canal, Rhine and Neckar.
Just in time for the start of the tour, there will
be a public showing on 24th June of the ORF’s documentary Goisern
Goes East in Linz's OK Platz. In 2007 Hubert von Goisern
and his team sailed from Linz to the Black Sea and back again,
and this documentary captures all facets of the adventurous Linz
Europe Tour East. The five episodes of this documentary
will also be shown on the ORF and Bayerische Fernsehen this summer. Read

Plans are also being made for the time after the tour. There
