According to US specialist magazine Downbeat, he is the
current best jazz vocalist in the world. And he is in Graz. No, that's
not impossible. It is (unfortunately) still an undervalued
secret. Perhaps because Mark Murphy has something better
to do than wander about with laurel wreaths. After four successful decades
on the scene, six Grammy nominations and forty albums, it is not necessary
any more. It is more important to him for example, to give his pupils
an understanding of his credo in what is now his fifth term as a guest
professor in the jazz department at MHS Graz: "When you are really
mature as a singer, then you do not just concentrate, but you put your
whole life into the songs." The 64 year old has meanwhile made
a fine friendship with one of his students, Gerhard Überbacher,
which
is why Murphy has not only written lyrics for his band Simple
Man, but also stands ready as special guest. "We are proud
to be able to appear with this legend. He is simply amazing!"
At the end of 2001, Gerhard Überbacher, Josef Kapfenberger and
Bernhard Wimmer founded a new band called G.B.J.
Together they make experimental funky music and are preparing themselves
for the recording studio some time this year. www.gbj.at
